Professional Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings are conducted by Registered Dental Hygienists and include a number of procedures which are listed below. Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) also include a standard dental exam.

Removal of Calculus (tartar):

Calculus, also referred to as tartar, is a hardened form of plaque which can get attached to a tooth’s surface if it is left there for some time and not cleaned properly. The calculus can form above and below the line. It is not something that can be removed via brushing and requires special dental instruments.

Removal of Plaque:

Plaque is a sticky film that forms on teeth and sticks to them. It is barely visible to the eye but it is a colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria needs to be cleaned properly and regularly as it produces toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums which can lead to periodontal disease.

Teeth Polishing

Teeth polishing removes all stains and plaque which cannot be removed through brushing and scaling.
